When 104 fixtures become 1,738 streams

What the FIFA World Cup 2026 revealed about scale, latency and monetisation in live sport.

Spain won the FIFA World Cup 2026 on 19 July. For our Spanish colleagues, including members of the support team, it was a particularly good end to a demanding tournament.

For the streaming industry, one of the most interesting results was hidden in the delivery numbers.

The tournament had 104 fixtures. By the time those matches reached viewers through services supported by MediaKind, they had become 1,738 match streams for more than 20 customers.

That multiplication is the real scale challenge in modern sports streaming. It is not simply one feed reaching a very large audience. It is the same event becoming many different services, each expected to work as reliably as the competition itself.

One event becomes many services

Some customers needed every match. Others focused on particular regions. Services ranged from low-latency HD to UHD with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, alongside DTV+ support for Brazil’s next-generation television standard.

Across the customer base, services ran on four cloud platforms. Each had its own combination of rights, formats, latency targets and commercial requirements.

The technology therefore needed enough consistency to operate at global scale, but enough flexibility to avoid forcing every service into the same model.

This is what scale increasingly means in streaming. Audience size matters, but so does the number of different experiences that must be created from the same live event.

Closing the latency gap

Latency in live sport is not an abstract technical measurement.

It is the difference between seeing a goal and hearing someone else celebrate it first. It is a phone notification arriving before the penalty is taken.

Across the tournament, MediaKind reduced streaming delays to seconds rather than tens of seconds. Our services ran ahead of competing streaming services in many markets. In one case, the stream was only five seconds behind the satellite feed, exceeding the customer’s latency target.

The important point is not that streaming has overtaken broadcast or satellite. It is that the gap can now be small enough for streaming viewers to remain part of the same live moment.

That speed also came with UHD detail, Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio. Low latency no longer has to mean accepting a lesser viewing experience.

More flexible ways to monetise the moment

Streaming also changes the commercial potential of a live audience.

MediaKind supported server-side ad insertion throughout the tournament, including a late integration with an external ad platform.

In one example, a streaming service combined inserted advertising during the first half of matches with a global food-delivery partnership, social promotion and subscription discounts. The campaign helped it triple its subscriber base during the tournament.

This shows how streaming can monetise audiences more flexibly than fixed advertising within broadcast or satellite feeds. The same live moment can support different commercial decisions across services and markets.

Reliability starts before kick-off

Across the tournament, audiences watched more than three billion hours of content. Combined viewing peaked at more than 20 million concurrent viewers.

Those numbers describe the outcome, not the operational challenge. Teams know when a match will begin. They do not know which fixture will produce the largest audience, run into extra time or create a sudden surge.

Systems were audited and resources pre-scaled before high-viewership events. Developers and test engineers hardened software under load. Operations teams monitored performance throughout the tournament.

1738 fixtures, 3B streams, 20M peak concurrency, no downtime! 

That outcome was created before most viewers pressed play. The most effective live-event operations are preventative: prepare for the audience, remove weaknesses early and keep the complexity away from the viewer.

What the tournament showed

The World Cup demonstrated that streaming scale is no longer only about concurrency.

It is about turning one global event into many distinct services. It means combining low latency with premium quality, supporting different commercial models and keeping every version reliable when the pressure is highest.

The best live-video technology still disappears behind the event. Viewers should remember the goals, the saves, the fouls and the result, not the infrastructure delivering them.

The more complex streaming becomes behind the screen, the simpler it should feel in front of it.
